Why Russia is Backing Syria ?

Why Russia is Backing Syria ?

Written by : Rawan Awny AbuAsad

The previous Soviet Union was the first countries union which admitted the independence of Syria, and it had diplomatic relations with the Syrian government in 1944.
The Russian-Syrian relations were enhanced by ascending the previous President Hafez AlAsad the throne of the Syrian Republic.
Nowadays, an international noose is tightening around the neck of Bashar AlAsad's regime in Syria which does not match with the Russian benefits in the Middle East.
Russia knew how to invade Syria indirectly, it had a cultural invasion through building bridges of culture between the Syrian community and the Russian one.
Cultural Relations Association was established to support the relations with The Soviet Union. In addition to The Russian Cultural Center and Russian-Syrian Friendship Association were founded to uphold the connections between those countries .
From a military side, since the start of the Soviet Union, Russia has used to offer the military support to Syria.
That support stopped in 1990s, but it resumed in the era of President Vladimir Putin. Since 2009, Russia has been renovating the Tartus naval base and dredging the port to allow access for its larger naval vessels.
The question is still whereas the entire world is standing against AlAsad’s unjust regime, why does Russia back Syria?.
The political analyst Ruslan Pokhov has written in New York times Newspaper that Russia’s fear of Islam radicalism is the reason that stands behind this backing:
”many in the West believe that Russia’s support for Syria stems from Moscow’s desire to profit from selling arms to Bashar al-Assad’s government and maintain its naval facility at the Syrian port of Tartus. But these speculations are superficial and misguided.
The real reason that Russia is resisting strong international action against the Assad regime is that it fears the spread of Islamic radicalism and the erosion of its superpower status in a world where Western nations are increasingly undertaking unilateral military interventions” .
In short, it seems that Bashar AlAsad neither cares for the people who are killed every day by his militias, nor does he heed to those people who are displaced every day for a single reason that they are innocent Syrians seeking liberty only.
That was the fatal mistake that is definitely going to tear down the tyrannical throne of Bashar, sooner or later .
